How do I know my current skin condition?

We have talk about different skin types in another post. Here, we will discuss about some common skin conditions and their characteristics. And yes, skin condition is a totally different from skin type. Other than skin type, you need to select your skin care products based on your current skin condition too. Remember, all skin types can be affected by one or more skin conditions.

Different types of skin conditions
Dehydrated skin

Many has confused dehydration with dry skin, often they will equalize them. But skin dehydration (lack of water) and dry skin type (lack of oil) is really different from each other. Their cause is different, even though they may look and feel similar.

Characteristics:

  • Dull skin
  • Lack of radiance
  • Fine lines
  • Rough skin (on dehydrated area), some skin may peel off too
  • Makeup is very visible on dehydrated area
  • Feeling of tightness and discomfort in dehydrated area

What will worsen the condition?

  • Harsh cleanser
  • Hot water
  • Moisturizer that doesn’t hydrate enough
  • Exposure to sun and extreme climate
  • Not drinking sufficient water. Even you are drinking sufficient or a lot of water, we have to consider the amount and efficiency of water that actually reach and stay at our skin is actually very low. This is why topical application of hydrating product is essential to make sure our skin is hydrated.
  • Age

There is a simple trick you can do to check whether your skin is dehydrated or you are dry skin type by nature.

  1. Apply rich cream (greasy, oil based cream) or face oil on your skin and allow it on your skin for few hours.
  2. If your skin absorbs it and you feel comfortable and relieved – your skin is dry, it needs rich and nourishing products.
  3. If your skin doesn’t completely absorb the cream or oil after a few hours and your skin are shiny and still feel tight – your skin is dehydrated, it needs moisturizing products (water based and contain moisturizing ingredients).

Sensitive skin

There are few reasons why your skin is sensitive as below.

  • Your skin is weaken over years by the use of unsuitable and harsh skin care products
  • Lifestyle like stress, smoking, bad diet and etc.
  • External factors like climate conditions, pollution, excessive exposure to sun (UV) and etc.

Characteristics

  • Redness
  • Feeling of tingling, itching or even burn sensation

Tired, dull skin

The characteristic of dull skin is lack of radiance.

It can be the characteristic of oily skin, but there are also other reason why your skin looks dull:

  • Thickening of the skin due to accumulation of dead cells
  • Slowdown in skin renewal
  • Poor micro-circulation which results in poor oxygenation of the skin

Hyperpigmentation

Asian skin is especially prone to hyperpigmentation.

Characteristics:

  • Dark spots
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dull skin

What is the cause?

  • Exposure to sun
  • Hormonal variations
  • Age

Acne

Rather than skin condition, acne is actually more to skin disease. It is a chronic skin disease, which often occurs in adolescence. But hormonal changes will cause acne too.

Characteristics:

  • Overproduction of sebum (oil)
  • Inflammation – pimples or acne
  • Black spots
  • Thicker skin

What will worsen the condition?

  • Harsh cleanser – cause dehydration and worsen the overproduction of sebum, irritate the skin and worsen the inflammation
  • Picking the pimples or acne

Premature aging skin

If you are at your 20s or 30s and you are having signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles or dryness, then you are having premature aging skin.

Characteristics:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Dryness

What will worsen it?

  • Sun
  • Smoking
  • Imbalance diet
  • Stress
  • Insufficient sleep
  • Alcohol
  • Depression

Mature skin

You can call this aging skin if you prefer. But rather than age, it is mainly caused by hormonal change.

Characteristics:

  • Drier skin
  • Deeper wrinkles
  • Loss of firmness
  • Dull complexion
  • Age spots
  • Sensitive skin
  • Thicker and rough skin surface

Overall for Asian like you and me, there is good news and also bad news for us. Good news is we are less prone to mature skin condition. Bad news is we are prone to all other skin conditions: dehydration, sensitive, dull, hyperpigmentation and acne. Oh no! This sounds really really bad.

Currently the major skin care brands that dominate Malaysia market are from Europe, Korea and Japan. I suppose those from Korea and Japan should suit more to our needs of Asian skin type (unless those European brands has specifically modify their formulation to suit us before they market it here). However, both Korea and Japan are seasonal country, which is very different from us (tropical country) I would say. This is the reason why we develop and formulate HERBEA AQUA, which is formulated specifically for Asian skin in tropical countries or climate.

HERBEA AQUA – formulated for Asian in tropical countries

HERBEA AQUA for Asian Skin

It is packed with 2 main ingredients: saccharide isomerate and also sodium hyaluronate to cater the issues facing by Asian skin. Lets see why is it so.

  • Saccharide isomerate
    • able to replicate the hydrating function of our skin natural moisturizing structure (NMF) – act as moisture-binding agent
      • solve the dehydration problem
    • able to bind stronger and longer to our skin keratin because it has similar structure to NMF – moisture locking up to 72 hours and helps in creating oil-water balance in long run
      • Solve dehydration and overproduction of sebum (hence solve the dull skin and acne issues)
  • Sodium hyaluronate
    • as a natural moisture-binding agent, complement saccharide isomerate by doubling the hydrating and moisture-locking benefits
      • solve the dehydration problem
    • it is a multitasking antioxidant – it is known to be able to fight against the free radicals, healing skin damage, lightening skin tone and etc.
      • Improve hyperpigmentation, dullness and skin renewal
    • it is smaller in molecule compared to normal hyaluronic acid – better absorption, better effects
  • HERBEA AQUA is formulated using plant-based ingredients and gentle in nature
    • Not irritating, won’t cause sensitive issue
